Our FreedomToday, from a distance,
I saw you walking,
The same trails we had tread together,
Not so long ago.
You looked radiant, as always,
And for a moment
I wanted to call your name.
But, suddenly I noticed something,
Very different about you.
You were smiling, and joking,
Like you did when we first met.
You were carefree and yourself.
Your hand was lovingly clasped,
By a new friend,
Who looked every bit as handsome,
As you once told me I was.
As you both walked by,
I felt the bite of my loneliness,
And the sting of cold steel,
Still fresh in my back,
And the chains of self-pity,
Began to tighten around me.
But, as your shrinking figure,
Vanished from my sight,
A voice, from somewhere unknown,
Spoke to me.
Upon hearing the words,
My pain left me,
And the chains fell to my feet.
I looked in your direction, and whispered,
Be happy. Always be happy old friend
I was free!
