Two of Fort Meigs re-enactors are shown with visitor Samuel Taylor Harris

Fort Meigs

History – War of 1812 – Reconstruction

Fort Meigs, a National Historic Landmark, was built during the War of 1812.  During the spring & summer of 1813 it withstood two sieges by the British and Native warriors. It was the turning point for the war in the Northwest.

Prior to the attacks on Fort Meigs, the American army suffered a number of strategic defeats and lost a great amount of territory. All of what would become Michigan and Wisconsin, as well as parts of Illinois, Indiana and Ohio were under control of the British Empire and her Native allies.

Fort Meigs was built to defend against this invasion. It was also designed to be the staging point for a U. S. invasion of Canada, which occurred in the fall of 1813.

Fort Meigs representative Dan Woodward will briefly talk about all this and the reconstruction and what it offers to visitors today.

Don’t miss this interesting talk and join us for noon lunch on
