Neolamprologus multifasciatus is a small, shell dweller from Lake Tanganyika in Africa. It is considered to be the smallest known cichlid. Males reach about 1.5 to 2 inches and females are around an inch in length. According to several articles I've read (see this article), these fish are colony guarders, which means the fish live together and supposedly protect one another. There is not a lot known about the behaviour of these fish, but the above article link and the links below should help you out; at the very least, it is one person's personal experience with these fish.

N. multifasciatus like slow moving water. They are found in regions deep enough that their shells are not disturbed by waves or current. Also, an under gravel filter will be useless. Cover the bottom of the tank, preferably with a sandy substrate and provide 2 shells per fish. It was recommended to me that I use a Whisper 2 power filter on the lowest setting possible (keeping in mind that they don't like fast moving water).

NEVER MIX SOUTH AMERICAN CICHLIDS WITH
AFRICANS,
or so I've heard.

Shell dwellers are known to be territorial. Consider setting up your tank with barriers. Out of sight, out of mind…
