NappingWell, I know why Sammy was sleeping all day yesterday. He must have been fighting off this fever that has now migrated onward to his mommy. Naturally, too, he was awake all night, so I'm feeling even worse than I otherwise might be. At least he's being relatively low-needs at the moment, so I can rest and drink lots of water.

Sam seems to be alternating his days. One day he sleeps all the time, and the next finds him awake almost the entire day. This has been going on all week. Today is a "sleep day," thank Goodness. Unfortunately, his "sleep days" require constant nursing in a way that his "awake days" don't; when he's awake, he'll take other forms of distraction. Nothing works like breastmilk for helping one nap, I guess, and he knows it.

Tell me that this picture isn't frighteningly grown-up and serious...

I guess he got used to all the constant attention and misses all the singing and rocking. We're trying to fill the void, but nobody can do it like Grandma!

Sam and I went to a La Leche League meeting last night, where he was much more social and active than usual. (All those babies, I guess.) Then he fussed and screamed on his way home - a combination of all the stimuli and the dreaded carseat...

The whole birth story, which is long and full of sordid details, can be found here. There are pictures, but nothing too terribly graphic (except, perhaps, the picture of the castor oil...).

The long and short of it is that Sam was born at home, underwater, just as we planned. What we didn't anticipate was the ten days of prodromal labor that preceded it. Ouch! Thankfully, Mom was here to assist Eric and me in the birth of the first grandchild of the family.

Breastfeeding is going well, as is sleeping. Life as we knew it has ended, but this new existence is pretty wonderful too.
