Pastor's Pen: November October September May April March February January December

Happy New Year!!!  Now, you’re all probably thinking, “O.K. Rev. Betty’s really slipping now…she’s lost track of what season it is!”.  I know it’s late August and the kids have just started back to school.  But in a way, it’s like the start of a “new year” in the church.  At least that’s how it feels to me.  You see, in just a few days, on September 7, we will return to our regular schedule of Sunday School at 9:15am and Worship at 10:30am!  It’s like a new year…a new start in the life of the church!  And I can’t wait!!  I enjoy the slower pace of summer…and getting out of church earlier enough to beat the “church crowd” to all the good restaurants!  But I also miss the busy-ness of Sunday mornings filled with Sunday School and worship.  I miss Sunday School.  I miss the way that God speaks to me through our class and what we discuss there…the insights and “aha!” moments.  I’m ready to get back to our regular schedule!  And so are many others I’ve talked to lately.  I’ve had a number of folks say to me, “When does Sunday School start again?  I really miss it in the summer.”

And just as we see January 1 as a clean slate - a new start,  I think this is a good time to make a new start in your relationship with God, and your commitment to Him and the church.  Those two things go together, you know…God and your commitment to the church.  You really can’t have one very effectively without the other.  Think about it…when God called the first disciples, he called them into a community (the 12).  Jesus taught them, by example, right from the start that they were going to need the support and encouragement of friends who believed as they did.  When the early church began after Jesus’ death, resurrection and ascension, they gathered together, “And all the believers met together constantly and shared everything they had.” (Acts 2:44) .  Obviously it was an important, actually crucial part of what they did.

So, now back to your commitment to God and the church.  It makes sense that if you are going to try and live your life walking in God’s presence, you would need the love and support of a community of believers to gather with.  And who might that community of believers be?  Aha!  The Church…our Church…our congregation…our Sunday school!  I would encourage you at this start of the “new year” to think about your walk with God.  Are you as close to God as you’d like to be?  Would you like to know His presence in your life on a daily basis?  Would you like to learn more about His Word and how it applies to your life?  Would you like to get to know others in our congregation better and share the struggles and joys that we all have with others that share your faith in God?  If you’ve answered “YES!” to any of these questions, then I would encourage you to come to Sunday School starting on September 7th!  And then stay for Worship, too!!

We have Sunday School classes for all ages - preschool through adult.  There are two adult Sunday School classes at the present time.  One class meets in the Altiora Room (the back room of the sanctuary).  This class reads and discusses books written by popular Christian author, Max Lucado.  The other adult class meets in the upper basement and does a combination of Bible Study and popular topics as they arise.  There really is something for everyone!  These classes are open to all ages of adults.

So, Happy New Year!  Hope to see you on September 7,  in Sunday School AND Worship!!

                                    Blessings,

                                                Rev. Betty
